NUCLEUS "Entity"

“Entity”

Today the first ever photograph of a black hole was released to the public. And I received the promo for the new NUCLEUS album. I can’t believe it is a coincidence, because if any band could furnish the sound track to the cosmic destruction of a black hole, it would be these Chicago SF death metallers.

After making initial impact with “Sentient”, “Entity” is the all important second album and it shows these guys are not letting up at all with their unconventional sound. They’ve managed to incorporate all the brutality and guttural thunder of classic 90’s death metal while coming up with an unpredictable and progressive style. One thing I really love here is the totally analog and natural drum sound...so much more pleasing to the ear than the digitized racket I’ve heard recently from the likes of AENIMUS and FALLUJAH. There’s a connection here to classic acts like ATHEIST and VEKTOR with the way riffs twist and writhe and the unusual time signatures that pop up throughout.

The album obviously deal with some massive science fictional concept. It starts with the brilliantly technical brutality of “Arrival” and the title track and becomes gradually stranger as the record progresses. By the time the last 2 tracks “Dominion” and “Timechasm” warp in, it was a challenge keeping up with NUCLEUS. There’s some odd minor key experiments going on here. But as wild as this sometimes sounds, it never gets so weird you can’t keep up with it. And the crushing force of old school death metal is also along for the journey.

Looks like NUCLEUS might be around for an eon or two, if the human race can survive…
