SERPENS LUMINIS "Bright Euphoria"

SERPENS LUMINIS

"Bright Euphoria"

SERPENS LUMINIS basically translates as "serpent of light"...the first indication we are dealing with a band that takes the occult very seriously. This is one of those bands that talks about "hermeticism" and "gnosticism". That's usually a sign that this record is going to be SERIOUS with capital letters. And so it is, even though "Bright Euphoria" can better be described as a mini-LP, lasting less than a half hour.

SERPENS LUMINIS is a Swiss band and that's about all I know about them. The record starts with a bang on "The Dawn Fragrances"...a wall of loud, aggressive metal with a dissonant, droning edge, wasting no time with intros or ambiance. Immediately noticeable are the bellowing roars of the vocalist, who yells like somebody dropped an anvil on his foot. It's not the usual death growl or black metal shriek and it gets your attention. But it soon becomes tiresome and unfortunately that is true of "Bright Euphoria" on the whole. It just kind of exhausts itself with non-stop yelling and aggression. I would think a band dealing with occult mysteries would be a bit more atmospheric and varied in its approach. But while the three lengthy songs here are not terrible, they just do not cross the threshold to something really memorable. Parts of the last, longest song "A Wreathed Skull" have tantalizing hints of such an approach, but only that.

SERPENS LUMINIS need to work on things a bit more to make a mark in the occult metal world.
