FULL OF HELL "Weeping Choir"

FULL OF HELL

"Weeping Choir"

FULL OF HELL has been one of the most hyped acts over the last few years but I'm still not sure where I stand on them even after sampling "Weeping Choir". I saw them play live a few years back and thought it was some of the worst garbage I had ever seen. Noise without structure or form, extremity for extremity's sake. But on "Weeping Choir", that's no longer really the case.

Make no mistake about it, this bunch are over the top noisy and extreme. The whole thing is designed to fry all your brain cells and blow your ear drums to pulp. The general sound is a kind of super blown out grindcore with black metal and electronic noise touches. Fans of PIG DESTROYER and AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED should be able to appreciate it the best. Songs are generally short and insanely fast, but there are riffs that can be discerned and the band even devolves into crushing slow doom-noise ala PRIMITIVE MAN. Longest song "Armory Of Obsidian Glass" is the best example of this...excruciating industrial doom crush with bizarre moaning clean vocals that will make your brain itch. "Angels Gather Here" is another tune in that vein and you can definitely detect influence from the likes of GODFLESH and AUTHOR & PUNISHER.

FOH also likes to play with pure power electronics and many songs will feature blasts of squall and static. "Rainbow Coil" is 3 minutes plus of the sort of painful noise MERZBOW is known for...not something I'm into at all. "Ygramul The Many" even features what sounds like a saxophone being tortured to death amidst the scalding grind. There is some attempt at varying things and creating more dynamic songs, but I don't know, this kind of stuff just kind of wears you out and there's more than a little feeling of ironic pretentiousness to what FULL OF HELL is doing.

Can't totally endorse "Weeping Choir" but it is a step forward for FULL OF HELL and it sure as shit is noisier than scrap iron being shredded.
