LEATHURBITCH "Into the Night"

“Into The Night”

Speed metal meets Sunset Strip hair metal? With a heavy dose of classic US power metal as well? Count me in! Does it actually work? Hell yeah, baby, slap some hair gel on me!

I don’t think Portland’s LEATHÜRBITCH are the first to try a sound like this, but I think they may be one of the better ones. And there’s not a lot out there that combines the anthemic with the thrashy right now, so “Into The Night” is a very pleasant surprise. After the 80’s analog synth horror movie intro of the title track, itself pleasingly nostalgic, the band whips into “L.U.S.T.” and right away this thing thrashes with speed and precision. Singer Joel Stair’s vocals are very dramatic in a power metal kind of way and his vocal lines on this first song are both odd and catchy...this is where the catchier glam metal influence comes in. But the best part of this track is the screaming lead guitar that brings 80’s shredders to mind.  Next track “I Want What You Got” is a pretty cool mix of thumping CRUE-like riffs and speed metal runs. A great an effective combination of genres and it really makes me wish LEATHÜRBITCH came along around 1987 because they would have been huge.

The remainder of the tunes here motor along in much the same fashion...some more obviously thrash and speed metal influenced, others a bit more in SKID ROW vein. And lovers of bands like LIZZY BORDEN, OMEN and TWISTED SISTER should really dig “Into The Night”, which also boasts a nice clear analog production. Check this one out!
