I’m a huge fan of veteran Chicago band CIANIDE, one of the heaviest bands in existence. Their primitive brand of HELLHAMMER-inspired death groove mixed with ghastly doom is enough to grind your bones into paste. But their output remains frustratingly minimal in recent times.

Coming to the rescue are Australia’s CARCINOID. This band is truly worthy of being called “disciples of CIANIDE”. One listen to “Metastatic Declination” proves that they have mastered the gooey, gruesome art of rifferama as practicted by CIANIDE. In fact, I would say CARCINOID is even more stripped down and filthy in their approach. This is truly disgusting death-doom at its catchiest...fans of GRAVE and early BOLT THROWER should also be impressed. The record sounds like it was recorded in a moss-encrusted tomb somewhere in an ancient graveyard, with a sickening guitar sound and rubbery bass. Even the echoey vocal grunts recall CIANIDE’s Mike Perun to a T.

There are monster killer riffs all the way through this beast, but reaching their apex on “The Drowning”, “Ravenous Being” and the lengthy title track. Three cuts from CARCINOID’s demo days are included; these are in the same mode but really do sound like they were recorded in a tin can. The record would have been just fine without them.

No false pretense, no gloss of any kind here. This is a brutal walk through a garden of the most primitive and putrid death metal!
