“Workshed”
WORKSHED is basically Adam Lehan and Mark Wharton, formerly of the long defunct CATHEDRAL. They’ve come roaring back with a vengeance here...WORKSHED is generally an angrier and more visceral beast than CATHEDRAL. When they hit their hardest, they resemble another British export: sludge lords IRON MONKEY.
Here are lots of raw, gooey riffs with bellowing vocals and a faint whiff of blues. When WORKSHED is on their game, like the opening “The Windowpanes at the Lexington”, “Nowhere To Go” and “On Sticks of Wood”, they churn up a sound that is very aggressive but perversely catchy. They only occasionally go for a purely doomy tone, like on “This City Has Fallen”. One experimental cut that doesn’t quite work is “Anthrophobia”...the weird stop/start aspect to the song is awkward and keeps it from building any momentum.
These guys wanted to make a heavy, pissed off album...and with what’s going on today, who can blame them?...and they’ve succeeded massively here.
