ESOGENESI

"Esogenesi"

ESOGENESI is Italian but judging from the cover, it looks like they've spent some time in the realms of Lovecraftian madness. That is one heck of a surreal cover, oozing with tentacled monstrosities with sleepy eyes and odd non-Euclidean landscapes. So here we have another band bowing to the altar of Cthulhu and friends...

Death/doom is a fitting vehicle for Lovecraftian odes and that's what you get with ESOGENESI.  Four long, lugubrious tracks packed with crawling, funeral-paced riffs, subterranean growls and sad, weepy guitar melodies. This is clearly in the vein of such past masters as MY DYING BRIDE, EVOKEN and AHAB and the band makes no attempt to deny it. This is actually a pretty good tribute to classic death/doom and ESOGENESI come up with some real knee-buckling riffs throughout the album, but most particularly on "Decadimento Astrale" and "Esillo Nell'Extramondo". These kind of bands are really only as good as their riffs and these guys know it. In addition to the four long tracks, we also get a short one "Oltregenesi" which features interesting guitar exploration.

One good thing about ESOGENESI is that the songs are long, but not EXTRA long...there are no overblown 16, 18 or 20 minute behemoths here. There's nothing here that has not been done long ago by the masters of death/doom, but then there is nothing here that would be a letdown to fans of the style.
