COLD COLOURS "Northernmost"
COLD COLOURS
"Northernmost"
Finland is a cold and
magical land near the Arctic Circle that produces some unique metal. Wait, hold
on just a minute...you say Cold Colours is from Minnesota instead of Finland??
Well, I guess that makes a certain amount of sense, since Minnesota is probably
closer spiritually to Finland than anywhere else in the US except maybe the Upper Peninsula
of Michigan. Even the cover of "Northermost" with its haunting Aurora
Borealis seems like something out of Helsinki.
The music, too, has a
pronounced Finnish bent, with traces of mighty Amorphis and other bands like
Sentenced and Insomnium. Doomy, melodic and a bit progressive, with death metal
touches as well. Maybe you need to live in the tundra to come up with this kind
of sound, but Cold Colours nails it. They've been around for 20 years and
"Northernmost" is the product of an experienced and professional
band. The album features very brief acoustic interludes all with
"Northernmost" in their name, but once we're past that, we get tracks
like "Nightmare", "Terminal Winter" and "The Pale
Heart" that are mid-paced, full of weeping twin guitar licks, dusted off
with "cold" sounding keys and topped with death-like vocals. It's a
vibe any fan of the heavier Amorphis will dig. At times, these guys also remind
me of November's Doom as well.
Now and then, it seems
a little too pat, like on "Spirit", and it sometimes is too close to
its inspiration, but if you like that icy kind of melodic death/doom that hails
from Finland, set your GPS to Minneapolis to experience Cold Colours...
