OTHISMOS "Separazione"
OTHISMOS
“Separazione”
Italy has a long history of forward thinking hardcore and
extreme punk bands. Names like Raw Power, Negazione and Cripple Bastards come
to mind. Now you can add the name of Othismos. These guys have really come out
of nowhere with “Separazione”.
The songs here all start in one place but end up somewhere
different. Tunes like “Black Star”,
“Hymn of Victory” and “Fangless Beast” all start with raging speed derived from
thrash or crusty punk…a shot of pure adrenaline to get your blood flowing. But
then the tunes detour into more angular, almost progressive riffing…almost like
mathcore. There’s very little drop in intensity but the riffs are interesting
and sometimes almost Voi Vodian. And
then there are longer tracks like “Madre” or “Tale of A Righteous Man” that are
complex and make use of dissonant noise in creative ways. There’s even a hint
of black metal. All the while shrill vocals add more harshness. It’s
unpredictable, fascinating and full of fury.
The album is not too long, not too short and that helps,
too. This is self released by the band and won’t be easy to find, but is worth
tracking down for sure.
