“Endless Spiritual Embodiment”

SXUPERION is an offshoot of California’s underground death metal stalwarts VALDUR, who have always been one of the best-kept secrets of the USDM scene. VALDUR drummer Matthew is responsible for the bulk of SXUPERION’s output, which treads much of the same grim and gruesome path at its parent band.

This is death metal from the deepest and darkest pits, suffocating and doomy. But it’s not quite as rabidly intense as VALDUR and features a lot of eerie ambient soundscapes which add a different layer of gloom to the proceedings. That could be an impediment to those who only like savage metal, but I don’t think too many fans of the doomier side of DM will be disappointed. There’s some pretty cool riffing throughout, but the odd ambient breaks pop up fairly frequently, most notably on “Negative Interior Intersection” and the concluding 10 minute plus “Endless Embodiment”. This latter tune ends on a quieter, eerier note than the titanic crush one might expect. And the soundscapes here remind me a little of some of the old Bathory tunes, most notably the Viking horns and fiery crackle of “Shores In Flames”.

It is really dark and epic stuff thoroughly recommended to all fans of VALDUR and bands like ASPHYX, DEAD CONGREGATION and NECROS CHRISTOS.
