“By The Light of Their Destruction”

ARES KINGDOM have been around a long time, with roots that go all the way back to cult demo band ORDER FROM CHAOS. I’ve never felt that they have really hit the target they were aiming for, but on “By The Light of Their Destruction”, they are closer to reaching their potential than ever before.

The songwriting is sharper here and the songs are more distinct. The band plays a grandiose kind of death metal that has strong roots in classic bands like IRON MAIDEN…for example, listen to the galloping tempo of “The Bones of All Men” or some of the almost PRIEST-ish elements of “Eighteen Degrees Beneath”. This is not just blast and grind stuff. Another band reminiscent of ARES KINGDOM’s approach here is HOUSE OF ATREUS.

Unfortunately, the production is just not up to par. The drums are organic but just have a weak, papery sound to them. The guitars are super crunchy but very, very dry and sometime the power of the riff gets hurt by how “crispy-crackly” they sound. They needed something clearer and stronger.
That being said, there’s still some powerful epic thunder to be found here. The band has moved ahead and when they get that better production, ARES KINGDOM will truly arrive.
