DEMIURGON "The Oblivious Lure"

DEMIURGON

“The Oblivious Lure”

DEMIURGON sounds like something that should be fighting Godzilla, King of the Monsters and the cover here even seems to show such a beast. Instead, we have a brutal Italian death metal band much in the vein of IMMOLATION, SUFFOCATION, NILE and the like. This will probably satisfy fans of those bands, but as you would expect, they lack that extra flair that separates great from adequate.

As is usual with bands of this style, it is a kind of monochrome attack of brutality that DEMIURGON unleashes. The first couple of tracks are naked aggression delivered with precision, but not standing out  much from the long list of similar bands. But these guys do have their worthy moments.  “Dei Dimenticati” and “Il Culto Cannibale” maintain the frenzy but the riffs and time changes stand out more and even include some pretty catchy grooves. The IMMOLATION feel is very strong here. The title track is another standout and the only cut where lyrics are in English instead of Italian. So DEMIURGON know what they are doing…

By album’s end, things again kind of flatten out into a very typical sounding mass of American-style death metal. It’s very hard to hold interest across an entire album of this and that curse hits here, but one thing you can say about DEMIURGON is that there isn’t an ounce of compromise in them. Take that for what it’s worth…
