“Revelation”

As long as Michael Schenker is alive and putting out music, there will be somebody who does justice to the classic hard rock and metal sounds of the 70’s and 80’s. From talking to him, I know he sees keeping the flame of that kind of music burning as a mission. “Revelation” is more evidence of how well he’s sticking to that mission.

Joined by all four vocalists who have sung for him during his solo career, Michael shows a bit more of a classic rock vibe this time around. The opening cut “Rock Steady” is a surprise, because it’s not a burst of fast and shredding guitar rock but rather something that very much could have been an FM radio hit in the late 70’s/early 80’s, with a pop rock sensibility and a touch of BAD COMPANY to it. An odd but adventurous choice for an opener.  “Under A Blood Red Sky” is more metallic but still with a strong melodic feeling. The early part of the album seems more focused on classic hard rock and then things get progressively faster and more shredding. There are lots of smooth and catchy heavy metal rockers like “Headed For The Sun”,  “Crazy Daze” and the longer, more involved “Old Man” popping up in the latter half of the album..

I won’t go into how each of the vocalists play their part, but let’s just say they all do their job with precision. My favorite Schenker singer will always be Graham Bonnet, but they all do fine here. On last track “Ascension”, the vocalists step aside and let Michael take over with that super smooth axework he is renowned for.

I can always recommend anything with the name MICHAEL SCHENKER on it to fans of rock and metal in the classic tradition.
