ENTRAILS "Rise of the Reaper"

ENTRAILS

"Rise of the Reaper"

It's actually been a while since I've sunk my teeth into a raw chunk of prime Swedish death metal. ENTRAILS can trace their origins back to the heyday of the artform in the early 90's so they've got the history and authentic legacy behind them. That being said, I can also see why the band never cracked into the top level of Swe-death.

The band comes across as a junior version of the mighty DISMEMBER and that's not a bad thing at all. They alternate raw brute force with more melodic and slightly epic compositions in much the same way DISMEMBER did. "For Hell" and "Miscreation" are surprisingly advanced in composition, with the former track having a rather cinematic touch to it while the latter tune really recreates the chainsaw crunch of DISMEMBER. From there, though, songs become more basic and ugly, with fairly short lengths and classic ENTOMBED style riffs in tracks such as "In The Shape of the Dead", "Destruction" and "Crawl In Your Guts". I also have to tip my hat to one of the best song titles of the year in "For Whom The Head Rolls".

It's fun and satisfying but never quite reaching the heights of the great masters of the genre. Just a tad too derivative to break through. But a little dose of ENTRAILS was just what I needed to slake my Swedish death metal thirst and it might do the same for you.
