“Moonless Night Sacraments”

Primitive black metal of the filthy kind is what Spain’s Deathwomb is all about. Nothing deep or complicated about these guys. They are what you want to listen to if you’re planning on spray painting pentagrams and goat heads on the local church outhouse.

They draw influence from the likes of early Beherit, Profanatica, Bathory and the like. You won’t hear any of the “freezing” black metal style here, although there’s some thin, piping synth once in a while that has a cold feeling. There’s also a sludgy, crushing vibe to  the riffs that owes something to death metal like Obituary and Benediction. The biggest stumbling block for most people is going to be the decrepit “whispering” style of vocal that ancient Beherit was known for. That’s a tough sound to get into, even if you like ugly, evil music.

The songs are short and punchy and the album is over in a flash. This is not a life changing or paradigm shifting band by any stretch of the imagination, but if you like grim archaic filth, it’s not too bad.
