TELEPORT "The Expansion"
TELEPORT
“The Expansion”
Here’s a band to keep an eye on for sure! I guess this outfit from
Slovenia has been quite active in the last few years but this is
really the first I’ve heard of them. Fans of technical death metal
with a spacy edge absolutely MUST check out this mini-LP. Teleport
bring names like Atheist, Gorguts, Vektor and Mithras to mind with
“The Expansion”.
Tech-death is sure nothing unique these days, but unlike many current
bands, Teleport retain a rough and pleasingly unpolished edge to
their sound that’s an antidote to the super-digital and soulless
vibe of many modern practitioners of the extreme. Despite that, they
are breath-taking in their ability to change tempo and direction
here. The bass playing in particular is totally off the hook,
bringing to mind the late great Roger Patterson of Atheist. At some
points, there’s a thrash edge to the playing, like the opening
riffs of “Beholder of the Silent Sea” and the title track, but
they can also change to a cold, dissonant sound. One thing that
really sets Teleport apart is how well things flow...no matter how
complex or extreme the playing gets, it sounds natural and the songs
have swing.
The crowning achievement is the 9 minute plus opus “Aphotic Flames
of Dissolution”, which proves Teleport can handle the more epic
compositions. “The Expansion” is too short to really be
considered a full album, but it packs an awful lot into its length.
New tech-death heroes and successors to Vektor and Mithras? Sure
sounds like it to me!
