CASKET HUFFER "Filth Ourouboros"

CASKET HUFFER

“Filth Ouroboros”

The daintily named CASKET HUFFER are a burly looking war metal band from the Western United States. This is not for timid listeners or folks interested in atmosphere. This is a real ugly release that kind of rides the line between brutality and boredom without pulling to one side too much.

“Altars of Despondency” opens things with an all-out artillery barrage of DEIPHAGO-style war metal that goes for six minutes plus. Much like DEIPHAGO, it is actually rather dull stuff. Blasts like this should never go beyond 3 minutes because they just flatten out into a tuneless mulch of bellowing roars, clattering machine gun drums and vacuum cleaner blast riffs. An album of this would have been nigh unendurable, but CASKET HUFFER show they have a bit more on the ball.
They do show they know how to employ actual riffing on “The Antichrist Vessel”, where you can actually latch on to the crushing power and enjoy it a bit more. Still, this is one mean mother of a song. This approach continues on the title track which actually employs some filthy doom and the excellent “Caustic Winds” which is kind of like ARES KINGDOM on smack. The final lengthy cut “Harrowing Mysticism” begins with war metal rage but develops into the doomiest and heaviest cut on the album.

It is still rather exhausting to listen to, but CASKET HUFFER is a bit more than the shapeless mayhem I initially feared.
