NEFARIOUS DUSK "The Wanderer of the Cold North"

NEFARIOUS DUSK

“The Wanderer of the Cold North”

With an album title like this, it won’t be much of a surprise when I tell you this is a black metal band. Not too many black metal bands would do something called “Wanderers of the Sunny Beaches”, right? NEFARIOUS DUSK hails from England and more specifically, the county of Cumbria. They love their homeland and this album is like a tour of this ancient and benighted realm.

Musically, this is pretty typical BM and nothing too innovative. It is well played and well produced, with a powerful guitar sound and also pervasive synths. Most of it is fast and droning metal with a sad melody behind it and some absolutely throat-ripping screams. What makes it a bit different is how strongly it is connected to Cumbria, with songs like “Millom”, “Duddon Estuary” and “Swinside Stone Circle” all about actual places there. I was inspired to look up pictures and information on these locales and I think it would be a lovely time wandering the castles, stone circles and lonely beaches described in these songs.

Some songs work well in that freezing, droning way and others just seem to drag or approach boilerplate black metal at times. But at the conclusion of “The Wanderer of the Cold North”, I was rather glad I got to musically explore a place I knew little about it. I’d like to visit it sometime.
