MINDLESS SINNER "Poltergeist"

MINDLESS SINNER

“Poltergeist”

I actually saw Sweden’s MINDLESS SINNER at the last NYDM Spring Bash in Milwaukee. I think it may have been their only American performance. That was my introduction to this cult 80’s band and their brand of classic metal. Now we have “Poltergeist” rapping at the door and a chance to see how their recorded output matches up with their live show.

This ghost is a friendly one if you like 80’s metal. There’s a good deal of NWOBHM style content here mixed with an injection of Scandinavian bands like WITCHCROSS and OVERDRIVE. So don’t come into this looking for any surprises...it does exactly what it’s supposed to and not a bit more. One thing that does impress me is Christer Goranson’s vocals...he has a great melodic voice without a trace of an accent. That voice works great on the catchy choruses of songs like “Rewind The Future” and “Roll the  Dice”.

The music itself ranges from serviceable to really good. “World of Madness”, “Rewind The Future”, “Altar of the King” and “Roll the Dice” are a cut above and stick in the brain as classic metal anthems, especially “Rewind The Future” which should be a signature track for this band. Outside of those corkers, the rest is fine, but not quite as good. “Heavy Metal Mayhem” is not quite as “mayhemic” as the title would leave you to believe. Apparently the members of MINDLESS SINNER have been together since the early 80’s and that cohesion shows.

This is an archetypal release for the Pure Steel label and sums up everything they stand for. Looks like the MINDLESS ones will be haunting the halls for a good long while to come…
